The Sovereigncy Codices: Drinks with an old friend

The promotion had been nice. While not something she had specifically worked towards, Admiral Sophia Nikosi had a nice ring to it and she was up for the challenge of such a command. The upgrade in quarters was a nice touch as well, except it meant a considerable more amount of administrative work. So she was more comfortable while working harder, maybe.

She leaned back in her chair and rubbed her face with both hands when there came a knock at her office door. “It’s open.” She replied.

The door started to slide open. “I come bearing gifts!” Blake said, holding up the bottle in one hand and two glasses in the other.

Sophia gave him a look. “Sneaking out a bottle of booze from the bar on my own ship is not what I would call a gift.”

“You don’t have to go down and get it yourself?” Blake offered, walking over to her desk.

Sophia gave him a blank look and pointed over at a section of shelves on the wall that had a decent assortment of alcoholic beverages.

Blake looked at them and blinked. “And you didn’t invite me for drinks why?”

Sophia narrowed her gaze at him skeptically. “Why are you still here? Didn’t Delta get your leave?”

“Yeah, but home’s boring.” Blake shrugged as he put the glasses on her desk and started to fill them. “Rites went home to the lady love. Keys is at the wedding of the century because he’s dating the Bride’s sister. And my beloved Captain is off looking for his retirement home.” He said as he nudged her glass towards her and picked up his own.

“Matt is retiring?” Sophia asked, shocked, her glass frozen on its path to her lips.

“No. But he is the more quiet type and has been wanting to find a nice little place for the down times.” Blake told her.

“Makes sense.” She agreed, finally taking a sip.

The Admiral immediately started coughing as the drink burned all the way down her throat. “What the hell did you bring?” She asked, grabbing her water and taking a long draw of it.

Blake was grinning ear to ear. “Salaran Rush.” He showed her the label on the bottle.

“She has that under lock and key, how’d you sneak that out of the bar?” Sophia asked.

“How do you think?” Blake bounced his eyebrows suggestively.

She gave him the dirtiest look she could muster at the moment. “You’re a menace, you know that?”

“Since the day I was born.” His smile grew even more if that was possible before he took another sip.
